Collecting empirical data for enhanced modelling
Models are used to provide estimates of road transport emissions and energy consumption based on the main parameters that affect vehicle operation and air pollutant production. Calculations rely on emission and consumption factors (EFs), which are derived from experimental data collected during vehicle emission measurement campaigns.
In order to develop consistent EFs and estimates, the models overseen by the ERMES Group are based on a common set of measurements. ERMES members collaborate in scheduling experimental campaigns, vehicle testing and data exchange.
Emissions data collection is performed by means of most widely used measurement techniques:
• LABORATORY (Chassis and engine dynamometer) testing
• PEMS (Portable Emissions Measurement System) testing
• REMOTE SENSING (roadside measurements)
• ON BOARD MEASUREMENT system (in-use test information).
